The Awakening!

Edna Pontellier is married to a businessman from New Orleans and has two small sons. She is 28; the year is around 1899. Spending her summer at the Grande Isle had made her awared of changes in her feelings. She loves her sons, but will not give up her inner essence for them. She respects her husband, but does not love him.
Edna knows that she cannot stay static. She decides to do things because she wants to, not because someone else expects her to. She finds herself interested in another man. When he suddenly leaves the area she is lonely. As the summer turns into winter, the family returns to New Orleans.
Edna realizes she needs more. Because of her upbringing and her social status she does not know what she needs. She discovers the strength of will to explore what she can be. Women were not to seek an affair, part of her desire. Does she have the strength of will to carry it out?
The Awakening was a very avante-guarde novel for its time. A woman did not think of rebelling against a comfortable life with a caring husband and children she loved, let alone have an affair. While the premise for the story would be different now, this novel can still speak to the woman trying to find where she fits in her life. As we get older our views change. Does that mean we have to change our whole lifestyle?
I couldn't identify well with The Awakening. Perhaps it is because I have been encouraged to be my own person most of my life. I have chosen to be a wife and mother, but am not limited into those roles alone.

Life Swap!

Life Swap is a book that tells a story about 2 people changing their life. One was Vicky Townsley who is a housewife with kids and is living in a very wonderful house. The second was, Amber Winslow who is a successful director of a successful magazine called “Poise”. Amber thinks that her life should have a more glamorous and meaningful task. Amber then posted a newspaper article called “Life Swap” and she was surprised that Vicky was the one who chose to swap her lifestyle with Amber herself for a month long. Everything ended up as a lesson for both of them: That is your life, you have to live it, no one is going to live it for you and you cannot alter the fact that you cannot live a swapped life easily.

The last straw by Jeff Kidney

Mentioned early in the story, Greg's father is becoming tired with Greg's "wimpy" ways. Also, the "worst teenager on our street", Lenwood Heath gets shipped out to military school, sparking an idea in Frank's head that plays a huge role in the story. One day, his dad finds Manny's old blanket, Tingy and throws it away. Manny gets revenge when he uses his dad's American Civil War battlefield as a play set. On Easter Sunday, Greg gets in the car, accidentally sitting on Manny's chocolate Easter bunny. The story ends abruptly as Rowley and Greg are sitting on the curb and meet a girl named Trista. Greg thinks Trista is cute and imagines that she and himself are in Rowley's country club in swimsuits with Rowley serving them drinks.

Dog Day by Jeff Kidney

The summer that Greg is going to have will be his worst summer ever beginning with him and his best friend Rowley Jefferson going to his country club after school closes for the summer, but Greg is kicked out, because he complained of even the smallest predicaments. Later, Greg and Rowley have a sleepover together, and watch a horror movie, called Hello, You're Dead, taken from Rodrick's room. The Jeffersons later invite Greg to go to the beach with them, which is where Greg had wanted to go, but he realizes it wasn't what he expected, where he begins to have a breakdown from no electronics, almost got jumped by teenagers he pulled a prank on, and especially the Cranium Shaker, a ride Greg really wanted to go on, which, however, makes him sick. Susan later tries to get Greg's dad and Greg together, but both of them realize that they should keep their distance. The book ends with Greg looking in Susan's album, titled "Best Summer Ever", which is an inaccurate record of Greg's summer, but he says that the person who takes the pictures is the one who gets to tell the story.
